The Predoctoral Training Program in Genetics has been supported by a T32 training grant from the NIH/National Institute of General Medical Sciences since 1997. The grant was first funded in 1997 under T32 GM 008629. It was rewarded and funded in 2022 under T32 GM 145441. The purpose of the Predoctoral Training Program is to optimally prepare students in their PhD training in Genetics, to meet the challenging problems of genetics, genomics, bioinformatics and personal medicine, and to become leaders in the direction of new trends in Genetics research.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be students in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics
- In accordance with NIH requirements, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- Applicants must have completed their first year of training and affiliated with a laboratory.
- Mentors of applicants must have completed the Iowa Mentoring Academy or similar training. If a mentor has not yet completed the training they must commit to completing the training within one year. Genetics students within the mentors lab will not be allowed to reapply if the mentor does not complete the training.
- If an applicant is applying for a second or third year of funding they must have met the requirements for continuous funding as outlined in the application packet.
Fellowship Benefits
- Support is provided for one year beginning July 1 and ending June 30.
- Stipend support in the amount allowed by NIH policy. In 2026 - 2027 that amount is 29.364. Remaining stipend amount is paid by the trainees mentor.
- Tuition and mandatory fees are paid up to the NIH allowable amount and available funding. Any amount above this will be covered by the trainees mentor.
- $300 in travel funds to support the trainees travel to scientific meetings or conferences to present their research.
- Eligible childcare expenses up to $3,000.
