Secondary Appointment: Ophthalmology and Visual Science

The Shyam lab works on diseases that affect the vision. We are currently focused on understanding the onset and progression of Fuchs corneal endothelial dystrophy (FECD). This disease affects 4% of Americans over 40 years. There is no cure for FECD, and the current treatment is corneal transplantation. Our focus is on identifying the molecular signals that lead to the disease and developing therapies to treat this condition. We use molecular biology, animal models, and omics based approaches to study FECD.
