Interdisciplinary Summer Undergraduate
Purpose: To provide direct laboratory research experience under the mentorship of research faculty to talented undergraduate bioscience majors and to introduce them to the challenges and rewards provided by a research career. Eligibility: Students who have completed the sophomore or junior year, majoring in any area of the biological sciences at an accredited four-year college or university are eligible. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply. This program is open to US citzens or permanent residents. Faculty Research Areas: For more information on faculty research projects visit our web sites: Program Description: Participants will gain laboratory research experience, participate in a seminar program designed especially for this program, and have the opportunity to join in informal social events. Following selection, the applicant will choose an appropriate faculty research mentor through e-mail/telephone communication. The 2008 program will begin May 27 and end on August 1 (10-week program). Departures from this schedule can be considered in special circumstances. Participants are expected to devote their full time to the program during its duration. Each student participant will receive a stipend of $3,750 for the ten-week session. In addition, housing in University of Iowa dormitories will be provided (~$1,800 value). An additional award of up to $500 for travel to and from Iowa City will also be available. Academic Credits: This is an award to support research and academic credits are not awarded. Application Procedure: To apply, submit the completed application form (available on-line), three letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with your skills and aptitudes (particularly in the biological sciences), and a recent transcript (which should include Fall 2007 grades) to the address below.
